The company of DC Clark (Insurance & Financial Services) Ltd was set up in Dumfries in 1985 by Donald Clark, dealing in life assurance, pensions and general insurance and trading from offices on Irish Street. By 1994, the General Insurance business was becoming too large and as I wanted to specialise in the life and pension and mortgage side of the business it was decided to sell off the general insurance book. This was purchased by Stewart and his late father Bill Hill of Westscott Insurance Brokers Ltd.
For the next four years I worked out of the Westscott offices as DC Clark Insurance & Financial Services. As the firm continued to expand, I moved out to custom-built offices on the Edinburgh Road.
The business continued to grow from there during the next 10 years, before being bought over by a company of financial advisers who were based in Glasgow. This firm retained the DC Clark connection for three years until September 2008 when it sold the business to Westscott Financial Services Ltd.
I am now back to the same office within Westscott as I was in 1998 and although I am registered with the Financial Services Authority as a consultant through Westscott Financial Services I trade under my own name of DC Clark Independent Financial Adviser, specialising in retirement planning, investment and estate preservation.
DC Will Services
An additional service I offer clients is the facility to have custom Wills drawn up for them. This has become an important part of the overall financial advice process and clients who either have no Will or wish to review their current Will are able to make use of this service.
Previously, this was a third-party service, which I have continued in my own right. I applied to and was accepted as an Associate Member of the Society of Will Writers.
DC Will Services was set up in November 2008 to advise clients of the importance of making a Will, why this document is essential if they want to make sure their wishes are carried out after they are dead, how various trusts can be used protect their estate, why Powers of Attorney are recommended to protect a surviving spouse or partners’ immediate access to capital from their late spouse or partner’s estate and consideration given to whether to set up Advance Medical Directives. The importance of a Will is often underestimated and I try when appropriate to include advice on the many uses this document has when carrying out client reviews.
